What's that page about?

Search engines place considerable weight on the <Title></Title> tag. Most SEO professionals will tell you that paying attention to this leads to rapid results - take a look at SEOMoz's comments on Keyword Use in Title Tag

The page title, as opposed to the heading, can be found in the <head> section of your page, that's the section that isn't displayed...except for the page title. You can see this in the caption bar of your browser. For example, this page's heading is "What's that page about?", but look in the caption bar and you will see that it's title is "What's that page about: Getting your page noticed", which is more descriptive. And this is important because...?

Because the title tag is what will be displayed in the search results on sites like Google - so it is a very important thing - it is the first thing a potential customer will see about you. So think of it as an advertisement, it's job is to entice people to visit that page on your site. Remember, it's about the page so MAKE sure that every page on your site has one and everyone is different.

To make the most of your title tag, you need to:

  • Make it descriptive: say what the page is about - in fact as we are marketing, make it a call to action;
  • Do not use just a list of keywords - it needs to make sense
  • Use your most important key word(s) in it and make sure they are repeated in the body of the page;
  • Do not repeat keywords;
  • Place your main keyword near the beginning of the title;
  • Do not use all CAPITAL LETTERS - that is shouting and very hard to read. Start the title with a capital and then use lower case letters - this is much more readable;
